Tips and Tricks to get the best Cape Fear area vacation home experience:

Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • Summer is high season in Wilmington. To find the largest vacation home within your budget, we strongly suggest booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Cape Fear area restaurants and activities.
  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Booking websites usually offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local Cape Fear area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides contain money saving offers on local tours, shops, and attractions.

Selecting the best rental:

  • Select a group leader, choose your trip dates, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Stylish 3BR Home - 15 min from beach or downtown has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property owner before you book your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Get details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some hosts charge additional pet fees.

More considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
  • At Check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let thieves spoil your holiday.
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
