How to get the best rental home value:

  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season in the Cape Fear area area. Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property managers typically offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Cape Fear area area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have discounts for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

  • Choose a group leader, select your vacation week, and select a spending budget.

  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible online. If not, email the property management company before reserving your rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must book a property that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • If there's a particular Cape Fear area beach you long to visit, search for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental

Additional considerations:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many concerns.
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Upon arrival, make note of any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to drive future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
