Get ready to ring in the season with this inaugural holiday event that showcases the beauty of downtown Southport. The Southport Tree Lighting Ceremony is a highly anticipated annual celebration that features caroling, refreshments, and plenty of cheer to go around as the town’s famed tree in the heart of the downtown area is illuminated for the holiday season.

The event takes place just after Thanksgiving at Franklin Square Park, which is one of the most recognized and beloved local parks in the downtown area. During the Southport Tree Lighting Ceremony, folks anticipate the countdown to the tree lighting while meeting and mingling with their fellow community members. The event features hot cocoa and some holiday cookies to keep everyone warm in the chilly winter weather, as well as the singing of Christmas songs, and a reading of “The Night Before Christmas.” The highlight of the evening, naturally, is the lighting of the big tree in the heart of town, which officially starts the season in this coastal community. The event is free to the public, (although donations are appreciated), and visitors of all ages are welcome to stroll down to the Franklin Square Park to join in the fun, and to start the seasonal celebration with a little coastal style.
