Celebrating its 16th year in 2019, the Flat Bottom Girls Flounder Tournament is a unique addition to the fall fishing tournament scene in the Cape Fear area, thanks to a unique focus on education as well as spectacular fishing for the “Flat Bottom Girls” – also known as the flounder who populate the coastal North Carolina region.
The fishing tournament itself begins with weigh-ins at 12 p.m. on the edge of the Dockside Marina in Wrightsville Beach, and the “live catch only” tournament always has some enticing prizes for anglers who want to drop a line and join in the fun. In addition to the fishing which occurs throughout the day, the Dockside Restaurant's South End Deck is stocked with tanks of live flounder, as well as representatives from NCSU and UNCW who will provide information on aquaculture and creative reef placement ideas, (such as farm-raising flounder, and breeding fingerlings to enhance artificial reefs.) At the end of the event, the namesake Flat Bottom Girls will graciously share their eggs, which will eventually be added to local artificial reefs to increase the flounder population. With both education and plenty of fishing fun, the Flat Bottom Girls Flounder Tournament is a unique event that will attract anglers and everyday visitors alike.
