In the summer afternoons, different programs are offered at the top of the hour in the afternoon. Some programs titles include the following: "Black Holes: The Untold Story," a one-hour show about the incredible power of these mysterious holes. A 45-minute show called "The Planets" updates information about our solar system including the mystery of Pluto – is it still a planet? The "Hubble Vision 2" is a 45-minute look through the lens of the most powerful telescope in the universe. "Live in the Sky" is a 50-minute show that helps the viewer to discern between planets, stars, and satellites in the sky.
In the summer, the evening laser shows are always popular. During the peak tourist season in July, shows are offered several nights a week. The entertainment includes a colorful pulsating laser show set to the music of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult or other legends.
All shows at the planetarium use an analog slide system in a star ball projector in the 40-foot tall sky dome theater. The technology is evolving, and the future is bright at Ingram as plans are in the works to upgrade to a digital system within the next few years. Then, the planetarium plans to increase its science programs to include medical, biological, weather, climate, and other science and technology features. This will also allow the planetarium to partner with local schools and communities to offer improved science education.
The Ingram Planetarium at Sunset Beach is a great place to visit on a rainy day or to beat the heat from the hot afternoon sun. For show times, admission prices, and directions check their website.
